EIC Chair - Peter Atchison B.Sc (eng), PAGeotechnical Ltd
The EIC’s Contaminated Land Working Group represents all parts of the contaminated land and brownfield development sector with over 60 companies regularly represented at our meetings. Members of the Group include environmental consultants, land remediation contractors, technology suppliers, soil specialists, environmental laboratories, environmental law firms waste management companies and Local Authority representatives. The group meets 4 times a year.
The group works with government and regulators on the development, refinement and clarification of legislation, regulations, and best practice guidance that impact and influence those involved in the assessment and remediation of contaminated land and brownfield development. The Group campaigns for greater emphasis on, and support for, development on brownfield land. The Group has been and remains an influential voice on issues surrounding the implementation of the Part IIA of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 (Contaminated Land Regime) and associated statutory guidance together with the regulation of land remediation activities and technologies. A number of sub-groups have been established, including Asbestos in Soils, Radon and a Part II A sub-group looking at technical guidance on Category 4 screening levels. The Group also has close links with the Environmental Laboratories Working Group.
EIC continues to be the lead voice for the contaminated land and brownfield development sector, lobbying the Government to introduce policies which will ensure a vibrant and growing industry that can underpin the growth of sustainable brownfield development.
