BWB BOSS GOES BACK TO THE FLOOR FOR NATIONAL APPRENTICESHIP WEEK

BWB Consulting’s CEO Graham Sant has gone back to his training roots to mark National Apprenticeship Week.

Sant swapped roles with apprentice structural technician Leyton Norris for the day to get a closer look at how new talent is helping drive the consultancy forward.

It was also the chance to see how apprenticeships have evolved and for Norris to experience the fast-paced world of leadership.

But it was also a full-circle moment for Sant, who became CEO at BWB just over a year ago. His career began as a Youth Training Scheme (YTS) apprentice, earning £27.30 a week.

From there, he completed an HNC, an honours degree and became chartered by 29. Today, he’s worked in 35 countries and leads BWB Consulting—but his foundation was built as an apprentice.

National Apprenticeship Week runs until 16 February, shining the spotlight on work-based learning and its importance and impact.

The trading places initiative was just one of the ways BWB, which has offices across the country in London, Leeds, Birmingham and Manchester alongside its Nottingham headquarters, is marking National Apprenticeship Week.

The job swap saw Sant work alongside Norris, gaining insight into an apprentice technician’s role.

They joined a BWB Hows learning session, exploring key internal processes and their real-world impact.

Norris also walked the CEO through his studies at Salford College, discussing coursework, time management and his goal of becoming a chartered structural engineer through a sponsored part-time degree.

Then it was time for some practical work, with Sant tackling drawings and 3D structures, highlighting how much training and mentorship shape early careers – also demonstrating BWB’s commitment to investing in future talent.

Norris also got the opportunity to shadow the CEO experiencing business development, client negotiations and strategic decision-making – learning that leadership isn’t about being in charge, but empowering others.

“Throughout the afternoon, he explained everything he was working on in detail,” said Norris, “making me realise just how much he has to juggle in a day.”

Before the end of the day Sant shared a look into engineering before computer-aided design (CAD), bringing out old drafting tools and discussing the evolution of the industry – reinforcing how engineering continues to evolve, creating endless career opportunities.

And as for Sant’s key lessons for success, he said: “Respect your mentors—they shape your future and be grateful for the support, success isn’t built alone.

“Salary isn’t everything at first, skills open doors. Always do your best- opportunities follow hard work.”
