TUTORS NEEDED TO HELP SHAPE THE FUTURE OF THE SOLAR INDUSTRY

Tutors are being sought to assist with popular new courses for people interested in working in the solar technology industry.

New ‘bootcamps’ launched by South Thames Colleges Group and Solar Energy UK, with the support of the Mayor of London, aim to attract new recruits to the UK solar industry, which is expected to create 60,000 new jobs in the next decade.

London-based learners are being offered the opportunity to take part in two-week courses, consisting of 30 hours per week across three days, that could set them up for a career in clean energy.

These will be followed by six-week bootcamps from 6 February 2023, with the right candidates being supported onto apprenticeships or jobs in the capital.

The programme is set to provide learners with a comprehensive overview of the solar industry - and engineers and other professionals within the industry are now being invited to come on board as tutors and mentors from February.

Polly Persechino, head of economy, skills and employment for the South London Partnership, said: “This is an excellent opportunity for professionals within the solar industry to be at the forefront of creating new opportunities in the sector for young people, who will enable the industry to continue to grow and prosper.

“Our tutors will become role models for students on the bootcamp courses, as they pass on their skills and experience to the next generation of workers within the industry.

“With 60,000 jobs expected to be created in solar energy in the next decade, this is an excellent opportunity to be at the forefront of shaping a successful future for the industry.”

No previous experience as a teacher or tutor is required, as the industry professionals will work with a tutor, who will accompany them in class.

The initial commitment is for six weeks, 4 days a week for 5 hours a day, starting in February.

The programme would ideally like to attract someone seconded from the industry.
