As part of our work for Cornwall County Council, we are delivering Social Value measures across the county.

In early 2024, the Royal HaskoningDHV London office was relocated, and as a result of a smarter footprint with a single cohesive working space, a substantial quantity of office furniture, kitchenware, electronic and IT equipment, and other smaller value goods were identified for disposal. Given our activities in Cornwall and West Devon, an opportunity was identified to make these goods available to charities and voluntary organisations in the area as donations in-kind.

The Cornwall Voluntary Sector Forum (VSF) was contacted, and they kindly arranged a single point to serve as a distribution centre at Fentenfenna Farm.

Drawing on the methodology established in the National TOMS Framework, a spreadsheet and cost model was provided of all the goods to be made available and VSF contacted all VCSEs in the county to make them aware of the opportunity. By cross-checking the VSF completed spreadsheet following collection of goods, an auditable tracker was developed to identify the value of goods which were provided to each VCSE with the overall sum of the donations totalling more than £44,400.

In addition to the material donations in kind, costs associated with the provision of these donations were borne by Royal HaskoningDHV and our supply chain, contributing further Social Value associated with the provision of materials to Cornwall as follows:

  • Costs associated with the coordination, sorting, packing and transportation of goods: £10,725.
  • Diversion of residual goods from landfill in Cornwall via resale or transport to recycling: £517.

In total, donations of time, goods and services to VCSEs in Cornwall total £55,660.00.

It`s brilliant to be able to support the voluntary and community sector in Cornwall through Cornwall Voluntary Sector Forum. I was contacted by Royal HaskoningDHV in London who had seen me at a Coast & Country conference discussing the particular difficulties we face in Cornwall and the incredible work that the voluntary sector does to support our communities.
